Description

Distraction-Free 1908 Indian Quarter Eagle, An Important Matte Proof Specimen

1908 $2 1/2 PR 66 PCGS. The year 1908 is particularly noteworthy for the quarter eagle series. Bela Lyon Pratt's interesting and unique incuse Indian design made its debut on this denomination (as well as on the larger half eagle). In addition, the Philadelphia Mint experimented with matte proofs for the first time in the quarter eagle series. Mint records indicate that 236 of these specimens were delivered. All of these coins are deeply colored, a fact that probably explains their failure to gain widespread popularity among the collecting public. As such, many of the 236 coins originally produced were destroyed at year's end. It is unlikely that more than 50 examples are extant today.
This coin displays deep sandy-gold color and a smooth, matte texture. The striking definition is exceptionally bold for the issue, but the eagle's shoulder feathers display the softness of detail that is characteristic of all 1908 business strike and proof quarter eagles. An appealing and technically sound Gem, this coin numbers itself among the most impressive representatives of this desirable first-year delivery.
