Description
1909 Quarter Eagle, PR64
Attractive CAC Example
1909 $2 1/2 JD-1, High R.4, PR64 PCGS. CAC. The 1909 proof
boasts a mintage of only 139 coins, delivered on four occasions
from March to December 1909, but reportedly only 78 of these coins
were sold. John Dannreuther, in United States Proof Coins, Vol.
IV: Gold, estimates a survivorship of only 50 to 60 pieces in
all grades. Collector push-back on the sandblast finish of 1908
caused the Mint to try an alternative Satin Finish proof in 1909.
The luster is somewhat muted in favor of the mattelike appearance.
On this coin, rich peach-gold color adorns each side, and the
strike is full. CAC endorsement adds to the appeal of this
eye-appealing example. PCGS Population: 25 in 64 (1 in 64+), 5
finer. CAC: 5 in 64, 5 finer (10/25).Coin Index Numbers: (Variety PCGS# 106501, Base PCGS# 7958)
Weight: 4.18 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
