Description

    1909 Quarter Eagle, PR63
    Elusive in All Grades

1909 $2 1/2 PR63 NGC. CAC. Due to public dissatisfaction with the matte proof finish of the previous year, the Mint altered the concept slightly for the 1909 quarter eagle issue to something less granular in appearance, but still somewhat less reflective than the old brilliant finish seen on Liberty Head coinage. This so-called Roman Finish was employed regularly for 1909 and 1910 only, after which the matte finish was again utilized.

The 1909 is by far the rarest proof Indian quarter eagle issue in high grades. Of the 136 pieces struck, fewer than 100 are believed extant. This Select example shows razor-sharp detail on the Indian's headdress feathers, as well as the eagle's wing, and close study with a loupe reveals only a few faint hairlines in the fields that limit the grade. A small, faint coppery speck below the Indian's nostril is the only interruption in the otherwise consistent honey-gold surfaces. Census: 8 in 63, 37 finer (3/15).
