Description

1909 Quarter Eagle, PR64
Only 50-60 Pieces Believed Extant

1909 $2 1/2 PR64 PCGS. CAC. After a frustrating first-year offering of matte proof gold in 1908, the Mint altered the finish in 1909 and 1910. Roger Burdette states that proof gold from these years received no special surface treatment, just striking from the medal press. At the time they were produced these coins were called "bright proofs," certainly a more descriptive term than the enigmatic "Roman Finish." This is an early die state for the 1909 proof quarter eagle, lacking any trace of the die crack seen on later strikes through BERT in LIBERTY on the obverse. The surfaces are bright, even yellow-gold. Close examination reveals a few shallow marks that explain the grade. Population: 27 in 64, 4 finer. CAC: 5 in 64, 1 finer (5/19).(Registry values: N4719)
