1909 Quarter Eagle, PR64
Rarest Indian Proof in High Grade
1909 $2 1/2 PR64 PCGS. The matte proof finish proved
unpopular with collectors in 1908, so the Philadelphia Mint
abandoned it in 1909. Instead, proofs were struck on the medal
press using carefully selected planchets with no sandblasted
surface treatment. Aside from the superior striking
characteristics, the proofs were virtually identical to the
business-strikes in appearance. A nominal mintage of 139 proof
quarter eagles was produced in 1909, but the new coins were no more
popular than their matte proof counterparts of the previous year.
An unknown number of 1909 proofs went unsold and were simply
released into circulation at the end of the year. Wear soon made
them indistinguishable from the regular-issue coins of that date.
Today, the 1909 proof quarter eagle is the most elusive proof of
the series in high grade. The present coin is an attractive Choice specimen, with razor-sharp definition on all design elements. The well-preserved, fine-grained orange-gold surfaces radiate satiny mint luster from both sides, with outstanding eye appeal. Population: 27 in 64, 4 finer (6/19).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 289H, PCGS# 7958)
Weight: 4.18 grams
Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
