Description

Condition Census 1909 Quarter Eagle, PR66
The Roman Finish Variant

1909 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. The proof Indian Head quarter eagles were produced using the modified Roman finish, after 1908 saw the introduction of the massively unpopular matte finish proofs. The Roman finish, brighter than the matte proofs but less spectacular and reflective than the old-style Liberty Head proof coinage, was equally unpopular. Garrett and Guth comment that that the 1909 issue is "far and away the most difficult issue to to find in PF-64 and higher grades." The present coin is among the handful of finest certified at NGC of this elusive production, with three pieces each in PR66 and PR67 (8/09). The finest certified at PCGS is a single PR65. Both sides display bright, semireflective, even yellow-gold coloration, and there are no apparent signs of contact. A classic gold proof coin for a fine numismatic cabinet.(Registry values: N7079)
