Description

1910 Quarter Eagle, PR65
Elusive Roman Gold Proof Issue

1910 $2 1/2 PR65 NGC. The reported mintage figure for the proof 1910 quarter eagle is an unusually high 682 pieces, the accuracy of which most researchers have long questioned. The combined NGC and PCGS certified population for this issue is only 169 examples in all grades, including resubmissions, a total which is similar to the surviving populations of most other dates in the proof series which have significantly lower mintages. If the 682-coin mintage report is accurate, most of these pieces were unsold and destroyed, as the 1910 proof is every bit as scarce as its peers.

This Gem example is boldly struck with a wire rim around much of the reverse. The Roman gold finish is largely undisturbed, although a few faint lines are observed when tilted beneath a light and viewed with a loupe. Medium straw-gold in color and suitable for a fine collection of proof Indian gold. Census: 24 in 65, 43 finer (5/15).(Registry values: N4719)
