Description

1910 'Bright' Quarter Eagle, PR66
Richly Toned

1910 $2 1/2 PR66 PCGS. Of the 682 proof quarter eagles struck in 1911, only 90 to 110 examples are believed to have survived to the present day (according to John Dannreuther). Apparently, the large mintage of proofs this year was due to speculators who believed no quarter eagles would be produced that year (they were, though, all in the fourth quarter). Since the collectors who had overordered proofs simply spent their excess proofs as regular coinage. The surfaces are bright throughout; however, what is unusual with this proof is rather than the uniform yellow-gold color usually seen, this piece is covered in rich reddish-gold patina with lilac in the recessed area on the Native American's neck. This suggests that this particular coin may have resided for many years in the Mint-issued sulphur envelope, as proof sets were packaged in these years. An interesting and vividly colored matte proof quarter eagle. Population: 15 in 66 (3 in 66+), 2 finer (11/23).(Registry values: N7079)
