Description

1911 Indian Quarter Eagle, PR68
Tied for Finest Known, Ex: Loewinger

1911 $2 1/2 JD-1, R.4, PR68 NGC. This is the famous Dr. Loewinger coin -- one of the finest examples known of the 1911 proof Indian quarter eagle. The 1911 matte proof was not produced in quarterly intervals throughout the year as other dates, but in two deliveries: 150 coins on May 20th and 41 on December 9th, the latter being in time for the Christmas gifting season, which was a common occasion for the coinage of small-denomination proof gold. In United States Proof Coins, Volume IV: Gold, John Dannreuther suggests that only 100 to 120 pieces survive of the original mintage.

As is always the case for matte proof quarter eagles, the strike is intricate. The granular matte finish prevents absolute definition, however, particularly within the crevices of the headdress feathers. The PR68 grade implies pristine surfaces, and this is the case for the present coin. Examination beneath a loupe locates only a single interruption to the otherwise uniform finish, a mint-caused thin line between the top of the eagle's head and the first S in STATES. This likely represents a lintmark, although its effect is less than on brilliant proofs because of the matte preparation of the proofs.

This is only the third PR68 example of this issue we have handled in the last decade-plus, and it is the first appearance of the Loewinger coin in our auctions in nearly two decades. The matte proof gold specialist in search of a 1911 for the finest quality collection need look no further. NGC Census: 14 in 68, 0 finer (11/25).
