    Description

    1911 Indian Quarter Eagle, PR64
    Popular Matte Proof Issue

1911 $2 1/2 PR64 NGC. The 1911 Indian quarter eagle is not as rare as some other matte proof issues of the series, but it is more elusive than its mintage of 191 pieces would suggest. Contemporary collectors did not appreciate the virtues of the matte or Roman Gold finishes the Mint experimented with in the early 20th century and many coins undoubtedly went unsold, to be melted after the beginning of the year.

The 1911 proof quarter eagles have a finish similar to that used in 1908, but the surfaces are more fine-grained. This delightful Choice specimen features well-detailed design elements and olive-gold surfaces that show just a few shiny spots in the matte finish on both sides. Census: 16 in 64, 78 finer (1/14).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 289K, PCGS# 7960)

    Weight: 4.18 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
