Premium Gem Matte Proof 1911 Quarter Eagle

1911 $2 1/2 PR66 NGC. After two years' experimentation with the Roman Gold finish found only on proof gold coins of 1909 and 1910, the Mint began producing matte proof Indian quarter eagles again in 1911. The original mintage for this issue is 191 pieces, but no more than 75 specimens are believed to exist today, most likely because the Mint melted unsold examples. This coin is spectacularly well preserved, with pristine, fine-grain matte surfaces that resemble sandstone. Absolutely no marks of any significance are to be found on this olive-gold specimen, although a couple of tiny obverse luster grazes are visible only when the coin is rotated just so under a light. The incuse design is boldly impressed downward into the surfaces of the coin and shows no obvious weakness. An incredibly appealing example of the coiner's art from the early decades of the 1900s. NGC's Census Report shows 28 examples graded in Proof 66, with 26 coins graded higher. Those figures undoubtedly include considerable numbers of crossovers and resubmissions (11/05).
