    Description

    Fine-Grained Matte PR66
    1912 Quarter Eagle

1912 $2 1/2 PR66 PCGS. CAC. The Mint in 1912 produced a fine-grained sandblast or matte-textured surface on the proof gold, visible on the present Premium Gem proof quarter eagle. Garrett and Guth write that the fine sandblast texture is composed of "reflective microscopic facets." Those tiny reflective granules are on display here against a background of pale greenish color. The surfaces are essentially unmarked and flawless in terms of post-strike contact, but the strike is surprisingly soft, especially noticeable on the lowest feather of the headdress and the eagle's breast. Population: 9 in 66, 4 finer (11/11).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 289L, PCGS# 7961)
