1912 $2 1/2 PR66 PCGS. CAC. The 1912 proof production continued the sandblast tradition the Mint first introduced in 1908, skipped two years, and then resumed in 1911. There were 197 proof quarter eagles struck in 1912 and a considerable number have survived, some in high grades. John Dannreuther estimates that between 90 and 110 pieces are extant. Color and surface quality varies, as J.D. points out, depending on the batch of coins being sandblasted. The coins from each batch was dependent on the size of sand used and the intensity of the blaster. This is an exceptional piece of matte proof gold. The surfaces sparkle with thousands of tiny facets created by the sandblasting technique. There are no immediately apparent flaws, one will need a loupe to find any surface defects. Bright yellowish tinted, light brown color. Population: 12 in 66 (1 in 66+), 9 finer. CAC: 7 in 66, 2 finer (4/19).(Registry values: N7079)
