Captivating Matte Proof 1913 Indian Quarter Eagle

1913 $2 1/2 PR 66 NGC. Mint records indicate that 165 proof quarter eagles were produced in 1913, but either many of these coins have been lost or, more likely, the Mint melted numerous examples as unsold at the end of the year. Our most accurate estimate of the number of survivors is only 60-75 pieces. This lovely specimen is difficult to surpass in terms of technical quality among certified examples. The surfaces display a matte finish with a slightly granular texture and warm, mustard-gold color. Both sides are free of even the most trivial distraction. NGC and PCGS report only three coins above the present level of preservation (11/00), although we doubt that those coins are appreciably more attractive that this premium quality Gem. (NGC ID# 289M, PCGS# 7962)
