Description

1914 Quarter Eagle, PR65
Rich Orange-Gold Color

1914 $2 1/2 PR65 NGC. During the "Renaissance of American Coinage," the U.S. Mint adapted its proofing processes to novel designs such as Bela Lyon Pratt's sunken-relief quarter eagles and half eagles. Proof purchasers, however, were not uniformly interested in the intentionally dulled matte proofs, with many preferring the mirror-finish pieces that had come before. After two years of experimentation with an in-between "Roman Gold" finish, the Mint gave up on trying to please all customers and returned to a matte finish for all proof gold coins until the end of such strikings in 1915.

This 1914 Gem proof comes from the next-to-last issue in its series. Its orange-gold surfaces show a touch of khaki-green overtone and are carefully preserved save for a shallow diagonal flaw at the cheekbone. The official mintage for the proof 1914 quarter eagle was just 117 pieces, and survivors are scarcer than the combined certified population with its many resubmissions would suggest.(Registry values: N4719)
