    Description

Magnificent Superb Gem Proof 1914 Indian Quarter Eagle

1914 $2 1/2 PR67 NGC. A simply stunning example of this rare proof issue, and one of the very finest to survive. The Philadelphia Mint coined a mere 117 pieces for the year, the second lowest mintage after the even 100 coined in 1915, which happened to be the final year of proofs for this type. These were struck in the matte proof format, with microscopic facets over the entire surface of the coin, which produce a softer mustard color and lack the reflective nature seen on earlier proofs. Furthermore, the contrast between the fields and devices was eliminated, producing a subtle and harmonious package to examine. The various stylistic proof finishes were not generally popular with collectors of the period, and sales of these historic proof coins remained slow and mintages tiny by even current measures. Today these coins are coveted as some of the finest examples of numismatic art, and collectors are eager to obtain any example which crosses the auction block. To obtain a Superb Gem Proof like the present coin, will certainly require substantial fortitude. None equal or finer have been seen by PCGS, and therefore it is reasonable to assume that this coin is one of the very finest to survive. A total of eight different dates of Indian Quarter eagles were coined in the proof format, all of which can be obtained for a price. Assembling a date collection of these would be a worthy goal for any specialist, and this is one of the most elusive dates to obtain. The surfaces and color are essentially "as struck" and remain as elegant as they day they were coined. Census: 12 in 67, 4 finer (3/06).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 289N, PCGS# 7963)

    Weight: 4.18 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
