1938 Proof Jefferson Nickel
Framed Number 26 of 150

1938 5C Proof Jefferson Nickel in Felix Schlag Frame. Some 390 different artists were considered to design a new nickel coin in 1938, replacing the long-running Buffalo nickel created by James Earle Fraser in 1913. Felix Schlag won the competition, and subsequently agreed to sign framed certificates for 150 1938 proofs of the new coin. The nickel itself is housed centrally in the matting, with Schlag's signature and a photo of his original design above, and the public notary's signature and seal below. The frame is original. We have handled several of these framed Schlag-signed proofs. This one is numbered 26 of 150. The coin is pristine and delicately toned with pastel lilac and champagne hues.
