1940 Jefferson Nickel, PR68
Long-Established Condition Rarity

1940 5C PR68 PCGS. Ex: Tom Mershon Collection. Though the Reverse of 1938 pieces command most of the attention for this early proof Jefferson nickel issue, the Reverse of 1940 proofs present their own challenges, particularly in the Superb Gem grades; for non-Cameo coins, NGC has graded five pieces above PR67 and PCGS has certified just three, one of which is the present coin (5/16). This is not many more top-grade coins than were known a decade ago.

The virtually flawless fields of this piece offer impressive reflectivity, and the devices exhibit razor-sharp detail, particularly on the crisp, straight steps. Generally nickel-white centers show golden overtones at the obverse margins along with more subtle iridescent hues, while the reverse displays a more rainbow pattern with the addition of yellow and cyan. An important specimen for the Registry enthusiast.
