Profoundly Contrasted 1964 Accented Hair
Half Dollar
PR68 Deep Cameo

1964 50C Accented Hair PR68 Deep Cameo PCGS. A marvelous example of this first-year variety, one that was issued early in the year before the new Kennedy half design was modified to deemphasize the wavy hair below President Kennedy's part. It was rumored that the President's widow, Jacqueline Kennedy, disliked the strong detail in the hair. A practiced eye can spot the strong, incisive hair detail that marks the variety with little problem, but the easiest identifier, as noted in Cherrypickers' fourth edition, volume two, is the broken bottom-left serif on the I of LIBERTY. Few coins indeed can match the quality of the present silver-white, near-flawless specimen, and the contrast between the inky-black fields and crisply frosted devices is remarkable. PCGS has certified only eight coins in PR68 Deep Cameo, with none finer (10/07).(Registry values: N991)
