    Description

    1822 N-4 Cent, PR62 Brown
    Probably Unique in Proof

1822 1C N-4, Unique in Proof, PR62 Brown PCGS. According to Denis Loring, who is tracking proof large cents, there are five different die varieties of 1822 that are known in proof, with a total population of only 10 to 12 examples for all five varieties. Newcomb-2, 4, and 8 are likely unique, N-6 might be unique or possibly two are known, and N-10 has a population of five or six proofs. Loring notes a second proof of this variety appeared in W.E. Woodward's December 1882 sale, but that coin has never reappeared, suggesting it may be the same as this piece.

This distinctive piece exhibits rich golden-olive surfaces with wispy bluish overtones and excellent eye appeal. Although not deeply mirrored, the fields are clearly reflective and the design elements are extremely sharp, much more so than on circulation strikes. Our EAC grade PR60.
