Description

    1831 N-3 Cent, PR64 Brown
    Ex: John Jay Pittman
    Medium Letters

1831 1C Medium Letters PR64 Brown PCGS. N-3, R.6 as a Proof. Our EAC Grade PR61. Ex: Pittman. Crude repunching atop the E in CENT is diagnostic for the variety. N-3 is plentiful as a business strike, but proofs are rare with 15 or so confirmed. A majority of 1831 proofs are the N-3 variety. The reflective fields and undisturbed devices display jade-green and lilac-red toning. Imperfections amount to a trio of tiny spots near star 3 and a tick to the left of the O in ONE. Well struck except for the obverse periphery. Housed in a green label holder since shortly after the first Pittman auction.
Ex: Dr. C.A. Allenburger Sale (B. Max Mehl, 3/1948), lot 877; John Jay Pittman Collection, Part One (David Akers, 10/1997), lot 216; West Palm Beach Signature (Heritage, 6/2008), lot 78.
