Description

Homer Downing's 1831 N-3 Cent, PR63 Brown

1831 1C PR63 Brown NGC. N-3, R.6 as a proof. Large cent aficionado Denis Loring grades this coin PR64 and lists it at the top of his roster of 1831 N-3 cents, while our own grade is slightly more conservative. The existing population of 1831 proof large cents includes 30 to 35 coins, and about half of those are the N-3 die combination. This piece carries a reported census back to Homer Downing and before, although it was unplated in the 1952 ANA catalog of Dowining's cents. It may have earlier been in the Dr. French Collection, according to the New Netherlands 1952 catalog, where the cataloger wrote: "Glittering light red Proof. Perfectly centered and well struck, with a gorgeous iridescent surface."
Both sides have mostly greenish-gold toning with considerable iridescence. A few tiny marks are present on each side, but they are entirely inconsequential. Here is an attractive 1831 proof large cent, perhaps the finest that survives. Our provenance is from Loring's notes. MRB PR63.
