    Description

    1831 N-3 Cent, PR64 Brown
    Mottled Iridescence

1831 1C PR64 Brown PCGS. CAC. N-3, R.6 as a Proof. While far from common, the N-3 die pair is clearly the most plentiful of proof 1831 large cents, while N-10 and N-11 are the other varieties seen in proof from time to time. Perhaps 30 proof 1831 large cents are known, including nearly 20 examples of N-3. There are currently 15 different 1831 proofs that are PCGS- or NGC-certified, while the combined population reports show grades for 18 submissions.
The 10 PCGS-certified pieces include two PR62 Brown, one PR63 Brown, one PR63 Red, two PR64 Brown, two PR64 Red and Brown, one PR64 Red, and one PR65 Brown. NGC has certified two PR63 Brown, three PR64 Brown, two PR65 Brown, and one PR65 Red.
This impressive Choice proof shows the usual flat stars found on these proofs, with all other details sharp, including bold denticles and nice centering. Both sides have lovely mirrored surfaces that display delightful cobalt-blue and olive-gold fields, with light brown devices and a splash of violet on the reverse. A small spot directly behind the lower hair bun will assist in pedigree research. Our EAC grade PR60+.
