    Description

Magnificent, Extremely Rare 1831 Proof Large Cent, N-3

1831 1C PR64 Brown PCGS. Ex: Pittman. N-3, R.6 as a proof. Only 15 or 16 proofs of this die variety are known. Denis Loring has tracked large cents extensively, and his census only lists one example of N-3 at a higher grade than this one. This piece was previously sold at the Pittman sale of October 1997, where it was described, in part, as follows: "A magnificent specimen with superb, glossy mirror fields and gorgeous colors, mostly brown but also beautiful iridescent greenish-gold, blue, violet and faded mint red." Prominent recutting is noted on the letters of LIBERTY, ONE CENT, and AMERICA. A couple of tiny carbon spots are observed in the upper left obverse field, near star 4. An unquestioned proof, despite striking softness on most of the obverse stars, and certainly one of the finest known of this proof date and variety. EAC PR60.
Ex: John Jay Pittman Collection (David Akers, 10/1997), lot 216. (Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 2263, PCGS# 1796)
