    Description

    1831 N-3 Cent, PR64 Red and Brown
    From the Gardner Collection

1831 1C Small Letters, N-3, High R.6 as a Proof, PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. Only about 15 proof 1831 N-3 cents are known in various grades, mostly with little or no original red color remaining. This exception has at least 50% original red with pale bluish-brown toning on both sides, most noticeably at the center of the reverse. A small number of proof 1831 cents of other varieties are also known, bringing the total population for the date up to about 20 to 25 coins. Despite access to records of about 10 different proof examples of the variety, we are unable to determine the pedigree of this piece prior to its 2008 auction appearance. For reference, there is a tiny spot on a dentil left of the 1 and a dull spot between stars 9 and 10. Perhaps just over a dozen 1831 N-3 proof large cents exist. Our EAC grade PR63.

With the superb catalog, a masterwork prepared by Mark Borckhardt, the sale was destined to meet all of my expectations; that it did, and then some. Be assured that I would highly recommend Heritage Auctions to any of my associates contemplating the sale
