The Discovery Specimen 1834 Newcomb-7 Proof

1834 1C Large Date, Large Stars, Large Letters. PR63 Brown NGC. PR60+ EAC. N-7, R.7. The obverse is plated in Newcomb's reference. This is the discovery coin for the variety with a pedigree back to the Peter Mougey Sale in 1910. It is not known exactly when this was recognized as a new variety; however, the first publication of such was by Howard Newcomb in 1940. John Wright noted that he has seen six examples of this variety and was waiting to examine one or two others that had been reported to him. A seventh example (grading VG8!) was discovered after publication of Wright's book. This example is generally considered to be the third finest known behind two Gem quality examples.
The obverse of this proof has a hairline crack from the border over star 6, through stars 7, 8, and 9. Otherwise, both dies are perfect. This is a lovely specimen with moderately reflective mirrored surfaces beneath deep steel and sea-green color, with grayish-brown devices. Considerable iridescence adds to the overall eye appeal. A few minor blemishes are noted, fully consistent with the grade. This cent is sharply struck as it should be, with full borders on each side, and every individual design element fully defined.
In addition to the seven known examples of this variety, nine or 10 proof examples of the Newcomb-3 variety are also known. As N-3 is one of the commonest 1834 die marriages in business strike format, the N-3 proofs do not command nearly the same premium. It was this latter variety that was produced for the King of Siam proof set.
