    1837 Large Cent, PR64 Brown
    The Newcomb-Starr Specimen
    Third Finest 1837 N-10 Proof

1837 1C Head of 1838, N-10, R.7 as Proof, PR64 Brown PCGS. CAC. The 1837 N-10 is the only Beaded Hair Cord type known in proof. Other proofs are all the Plain Hair Cord Style. A splendid Choice proof possessing exceptional eye appeal, this cent exhibits a medley of golden-brown, olive, blue, and violet toning. Reflective fields accent the sharp design features and contrast nicely with the satin devices. Striking weakness is evident only at stars 7 through 12 on the obverse, and the lower border on the reverse.

In his Proof Encyclopedia, Walter Breen recorded 1837 proof large cents for Newcomb-3, 6, 8, 10, and 13, with a total population of just over a dozen coins. Some of the older listings have been discounted, and even today the experts do not always agree about the proof status of the different examples.

Denis Loring has been researching and recorded proof large cents for many years. He has confirmed three proofs of N-3, two of N-9, and three of N-10. Other cent specialists have confirmed two proofs of N-6, although Loring considers those piece to be prooflike examples.

PCGS has certified six proofs, including the present piece, as PR64 Brown (3), PR65+ Brown, PR66 Red and Brown, and PR67 Brown (9/15). Seven NGC certified proofs include coins graded PR63 Brown (3), PR63 Red and Brown, PR65 Brown, PR65 Red and Brown, and PR66 Brown.

This splendid proof will appeal to variety specialists, date collectors, and type collectors. Our EAC grade PR60+.
