    Description

    1837 N-9 Cent, PR63 Brown
    Head of 1838

1837 1C Head of 1838 PR63 Brown NGC. N-9, R.1 (R.8 as a Proof). Our EAC Grade PR60. Ex: Mervis Collection. The obverse has a faint crack across Liberty's neck, and that is the earliest state recorded for the die. The reverse is perfect with no die cracks or other defects.

Only about a dozen proof 1837 large cents are known, and only two of those are confirmed for the Newcomb-9 die pairing. This distinctive piece has golden-olive mirrors with bluish-violet toning splashed on the obverse and reverse surfaces. The strike is bold as expected, and the fields are lightly mirrored.
Ex: Don Kagin; Tom Reynolds; Denis Loring; Eric Streiner; Don Willis; Greg Hannigan.
From The Adam Mervis Large Cent Collection.(Registry values: P4) (PCGS# 1808)
