Description

    1838 N-11 Cent, PR64 Brown
    About 30 Known

1838 1C PR64 Brown PCGS. CAC. N-11, Low R.6 as a Proof. Howard Newcomb described two different varieties from a single die pair, known as N-11 and N-13. The N-11 cents are early die states, and all proofs are from the earliest state. Later die states with an obvious rim break below star 1 are known as N-13, quite rare, and usually in circulated grades. The 1838 N-11 is a borderline Low R.6 or High R.5 variety in proof, with approximately 30 pieces known at all numerical levels.
The olive-brown obverse shows hints of pale blue and violet, while the vivid sea-green reverse exhibits hints of olive and gold. Stars 1 through 6 are flat on this nicely centered Choice proof, with all other details boldly rendered. The fields of this piece are reflective rather than deeply mirrored. Our EAC grade PR60.
