Description

Select Proof 1841 Cent

1841 PR 63 Red and Brown, Questionable Color. N-1, the only dies from which proofs were struck this year. Breen (1977) notes that several of the proofs of this year have fiery-red color. We suspect this one did too before cleaning as it still retains a fair amount with bright iridescent blue peripheries. The fields are deeply mirrored and the rims squared off, leaving no doubt about the status of this coin. An undetermined number of proofs were struck from these dies (and no business strikes) with a couple of dozen estimated today in all grades.
