    Description

    1842 N-1 Cent, PR64 Brown
    Very Rare in Proof Format

1842 1C PR64 Brown PCGS. N-1, R.7 as a Proof. Our EAC Grade PR61. Grellman Die State a. The proof 1842 cent is much rarer than its 1841 predecessor. Breen (1977) knew of six specimens, including one each in the Smithsonian and ANS holdings. The present coin is #5 on his pedigree roster. Today, PCGS estimates that 10 examples are known. All at PCGS are certified as Brown, though at least one piece, the Parmelee specimen, retains substantial mint red. This is a lovely light brown and chestnut-tan piece with mark-free surfaces. Some deeper gray toning is noted at 12 and 6 o'clock on the reverse. The strike is full except on stars 6 and 7. Population: 3 in 64 Brown, 2 finer (11/13).
