    Description

    1845 N-14 Large Cent, PR64 Brown
From John Pittman's Cased Proof Set
Previously from the Anderson Dupont Sale

1845 1C N-14, High R.6, PR64 Brown PCGS. CAC. The 1845 N-14 cent is a proof-only variety that shares a reverse die appearing in several different years. When David Akers described this coin, he noted that it is a "Very Choice Proof, a virtual Gem." PCGS concurs with their PR64 Brown grade, and we are just as fond of this piece as was Akers. When John Pittman assembled his 1845 proof set, he purchased all three gold coins from a single source, the "Memorable" sale of 1948. With those coins in place, he acquired the silver and copper coins from various sources. Pittman paid a total of $1,041 for the 10 coins that were all purchased between 1946 and 1954. The set realized $756,250 in 1998.

This near-Gem proof cent has considerable bright to faded mint red on each side with delicate blue overtones. A small spot on the point of the bust, and another below the diagonal of the N in ONE confirm the pedigree of this splendid cent. Our EAC grade PR63.
