    Description

    1845 N-14 Cent, PR64 Red and Brown
    Proof-Only Variety
The Only PCGS Red and Brown Proof

1845 1C N-14, High R.6, PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. Our EAC Grade PR63. Bold design details appear on both sides of this lovely Choice Red and Brown proof large cent. Moderately mirrored fields frame the satin devices of this example, showing attractively blended blue and iridescent toning over faded mint color.

Variety: This die pair is known only in proof format, from a reverse die that was used for proof large cents from 1844 through 1849. An irregular die scratch on the outer rim over TED of UNITED identifies that die.

Population Data (3/15): PCGS reports eight proof 1845 cents, including seven in PR63 through PR66 Brown and this PR64 example, the only Red and Brown proof.

Heritage Commentary: Just over a dozen 1845 N-14 proof large cents are known, and the present example is one of the finest, tied with two others for the best that Denis Loring lists in his proof census.

    Provenance: Richard Picker (6/1/1955); Willard C. Blaisdell; R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (9/1976); Eric J. Streiner (1/1994); Wes Rasmussen (Superior, 2/1998), lot 89. (Variety PCGS# 397606, Base PCGS# 1965)
