Description

    1846 N-22 Cent, PR64 Brown
    Proof-Only Variety

1846 1C PR64 Brown PCGS. N-22, R.7 as a Proof. Only about 20 1846 proof large cents exist for several varieties, and about half of those are examples of the N-22 die marriage. There are actually only about seven confirmed proofs of this die marriage, with other listings in old auction catalogs recorded for coins unseen in recent years. Other 1846 proof varieties include N-1 (R.8), N-21 (unique), and N-24 (R.7). The N-22 and N-24 combinations are known only as proofs, further increasing demand for this piece.
This coin today is certified PR64 Brown, but when we handled it two decades ago it was PCGS-graded PR63 Red and Brown. The fields are lightly reflective with olive-brown on the obverse and deeply faded reddish-brown on the reverse. A tiny spot left of star 10 and another in the space right of the Y in LIBERTY will aid future identification. Our EAC grade PR63.
