    Description

    1846 N-1 Cent, PR65 Brown
    Very Rare as a Proof
    Ex: Starr, Naftzger

1846 1C PR65 Brown PCGS. N-1, High R.7 as a Proof. Our EAC Grade PR62. Grellman Die State b. The 18 is repunched south, diagnostic for the variety. Orange-red illuminates protected areas, especially on the reverse. The devices are medium brown and the fields are blue-green. Precisely struck with noticeably reflective fields. Imperfections are trivial though for pedigree purposes we note a fleck beneath star 6 and a tick above the O in ONE.

Business strike examples of N-1 are plentiful but proofs are very rare. Breen lists only three examples in his proof encyclopedia, with the present coin designated as #2. Today, its status as a proof is contested. PCGS and Denis Loring consider it a proof. Grellman grades it MS65 Prooflike and tied for first place in his Condition Census.
    Ex: J.C. Morgenthau & Co. (10/1939); Floyd T. Starr (Stack's, 6/1984), lot 472; R.E. Naftzger, Jr. (Ira & Larry Goldberg, 9/2009), lot 704.
From The Adam Mervis Large Cent Collection. (PCGS# 405955)
