Description

    1847 N-42 Cent, PR65 Red and Brown
Tied for Finest 1847 Proof Cent

1847 1C PR65 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. N-42, Low R.7 as a Proof. Only about a dozen 1847 proof large cents are known, all from the dies of N-42. The present specimen was formerly in the R.E. Naftzger, Jr., Robinson S. Brown, Jr., and Daniel W. Holmes collections, and it is the second finest known 1847 proof cent. Both sides have highly appealing surfaces combining light orange mint color fading to dark blue, violet, and olive-gold toning. The fields are fully mirrored with lustrous devices. A tiny carbon fleck below the 8 identifies this specimen, and two Mint-made obverse rim defects described in the Holmes catalog are hidden beneath the plastic lip of the PCGS holder. We agree with Bob Grellman's grade of PR64, and note his ranking of this piece in a first-place tie with two other proofs. Our EAC grade PR64.
Ex: C. David Pierce; Hollinbeck-Kagin Coin Co. (5/15/1947); R.E. Naftzger, Jr.; Robinson S. Brown, Jr. (4/17/1999); Daniel W. Holmes (Goldberg Coins, 1/2011), lot 255.
