Description
1848 Cent, PR64+ Brown
Rare Newcomb-19, Proof-Only Variety
1848 1C PR64+ Brown PCGS. CAC. N-19, Low R.6. The Newcomb-19
die variety is a proof-only issue. Although in past auctions we
have estimated the survivorship to the extent of perhaps 35 to 40
pieces or R.5, in the last auction appearance we rated it Low R.6.
PCGS' CoinFacts website posits an even lower number of 25 pieces,
again Low R.6 rather than R.5. The current PCGS data show 14
submissions in PR64 through PR66 (the highest graded), including
Brown, Red and Brown, and Red pieces. This near-Gem proof Brown
specimen clearly shows the faint die line between the base of
Liberty and the upright of the 1 in the date, as well as repunching
on the base of the 1. The base of the second 8 in the date is
doubled. The surfaces display a sharp strike throughout against
prevailing olive, violet, and mahogany-gold hues. Our EAC grade
PR60. Population: 3 in 64 (1 in 64+) Brown, 2 finer (3/13).From The Jim O'Neal Collection.(Registry values: P2)
