Description
Impressive 1848 Large Cent
N-19, PR66 Red and Brown
1848 1C PR66 Red and Brown NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. N-19, Low
R.6. A very rare proof-only variety. Walter Breen, in his
Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins,
presents a roster of 16 pieces, but then says: " ... I have
excellent reason to believe that this enumeration is far from
complete."This Premium Gem has impressive, well-preserved surfaces on both sides. The obverse displays intermingled mint orange color with hints of blue, while the reverse offers rich reddish-orange coloration with tinges of light blue. The strike is sharp, and there is slight but noticeable cameo contrast. There is a fine irregular line across the 1 in the date just above the base. The reverse has a fine die line on the rim over TED. Census: 2 in 66 Red and Brown, 0 finer (4/09). The highest Red and Brown coins at PCGS are a pair of PR65s. EAC PR63.(Registry values: P2)
