Description

Rarely Encountered 1848 Cent, PR66 Red and Brown
Ex: Phil Kaufman

1848 1C PR66 Red and Brown NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. N-19, Low R.6. A very rare proof-only variety. Walter Breen, in his Encyclopedia of United States and Colonial Proof Coins, presents a roster of 16 pieces, but then says: " ... I have excellent reason to believe that this enumeration is far from complete."
This Premium Gem has impressive, well-preserved surfaces on both sides. The obverse displays intermingled mint orange color with hints of blue, while the reverse offers tinges reddish-orange with a strong presence of deeper blue. The strike is sharp, and there is slight but noticeable cameo contrast. On the obverse there is a tiny planchet flake out of the field between the top of the 1 and the end of the bust. The reverse shows a similar tiny flake below the C in CENT. Census: 2 in 66 Red and Brown, 0 finer (10/09). The highest Red and Brown coins at PCGS are three PR65s. MRB PR63.(Registry values: P2)
