    1849 N-18 Cent, PR62 Red and Brown
    Proof-Only Variety

    1849 1C PR62 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. N-18, R.6. Our EAC Grade PR62. The lower obverse and most of the reverse exhibit bluish-steel toning with splashes of original orange mint color at the upper obverse. Faint hairlines at the lower right obverse prevent a higher grade. A dark toning spot appears at the obverse border above star 5.

    Variety: N-18, R.6. A proof-only variety that features the shared reverse die of several proof large cents struck in the 1840s.

    Population Data (8/15): PCGS has certified 17 proof 1849 large cents including this example, one of 10 with the Red and Brown designation.

    Heritage Commentary: Denis Loring records just over one dozen proofs of this variety in his Census. This piece is tied for eighth place in his record. The Rasmussen cataloger noted that this piece was removed from a PR64 PCGS Red and Brown holder.
