Description

1849 Cent, PR64 Red and Brown
Rare Proof-Only N-18

1849 1C PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. N-18, R.6. Our EAC Grade PR64. The date varies in relief, perhaps due to a defective gang punch. The usual reverse die for proof cents of the era, identified by a die scratch on the rim near the E in UNITED. A rare proof-only variety. The strike is crisp and there is no hint of abrasions. Orange-gold outlines design elements while the exposed fields and high points are steel-gray. One small spot above the flag of the 1 provides an identifier. A small, narrow strike-through (as coined) rests above star 1. PCGS estimates 15 to 20 proofs of this date are known. That firm has a population of 13 pieces but some may represent resubmissions over the past 27 years. The NGC Census lists an additional three pieces.
