Description
1855 Slanted 55 N-10 Cent
PR66 Red and Brown
Significant Mint Luster on Each Side
1855 1C PR66 Red and Brown PCGS. CAC. N-10, R.5 as a Proof.
Walter Breen's Proof Encyclopedia notes that the 1855 proof
large cents are known in the Newcomb-10 and Newcomb-11 varieties,
with the Newcomb-10 much more frequently seen. Breen estimates that
perhaps 100 survive of the Newcomb-10, versus only 15 of the
Newcomb-11.This Premium Gem proof is an example of the Newcomb-10, attributed by the point of the curl right of center of the 8 in the date, a strong but small dot or die defect running down to the left from the front edge of the coronet, and a line from the dentils down to the left side of the O in OF.
In contrast, Breen describes the Newcomb-11 die variety thusly: "Distinctive among the three slanting 5's dies, this has curl point very slightly r. of inner r. curve of 8; no spur from front line of coronet. Extremely rare; Newcomb never owned one."
Even though the Newcomb-10 is the more widely seen variety, the present Premium Gem Red and Brown example is clearly atop the Condition Census of the certified proofs surviving. PCGS and NGC have seen a total of 12 submissions in Red and Brown, with the present coin and one other PCGS example tied for the finest known of this color designation. Only one fully Red example has been certified (PR64 Red NGC). The finest Red and Brown examples at NGC are two grading events in PR65 (12/12).
Bright orange surfaces display traces of sky-blue and crimson and are immaculately preserved. The strike is uniformly bold throughout. A lovely Premium Gem proof large cent. Our EAC grade PR64.
