Proof-Only Variety

1856 1C N-5, R.5, PR64 Brown PCGS. Housed in a green-label PCGS holder, this splendid proof has a bold strike with mirrored fields. The steel-blue surfaces show tinges of orange mint color on the obverse.

Variety: N-5, R.5. A proof-only variety.

Population Data (8/15): PCGS reports 36 proof 1856 large cents, including five each in PR64 Brown and PR65 Brown. The others include 18 examples in PR64 Red and Brown or finer.

Heritage Commentary: The last three years of proof large cents, 1855 to 1857, are encountered far more frequently than earlier years. However, they are hardly common. Denis Loring records about 40 proof 1855 cents, about the same number of proof 1856 cents, and about 75 proof 1857 large cents.
