Gem Proof 66 Brown PCGS 1857 Large Cent, N-3 Small Date
1857 Small Date PR 66 Brown PCGS. N-3, R.5. A sharp and glossy coin with deep tan color and tremendous eye appeal, coined in the final year of large cent production from dies that were only used to produce proofs of the date. Three faint diagnostic die cracks are seen on the obverse, the first from the third star to Liberty's nose, the second from the fifth star to her tiara, and the third from the 11th star to the hair bun behind her head. This is the finest proof example of the date certified by PCGS, and after just one glance the reason for that status becomes immediately apparent, for it is difficult to imagine a nicer Braided Hair large cent as far as overall condition is concerned. Population: 1 at 66 , with none finer (7/98). By way of comparison we note that NGC has certified only 1 at 66 as well, again with none finer (4/98).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 2275, PCGS# 2000, GSID# 1207)
