    Description

Late State Proof 1857 N-3 Cent

1857 1C N-3, Low R.5. PR63 Red and Brown NGC. PR63 EAC. Two of the five varieties known for the year were only produced in Proof format, with the N-3 die combination being much more available than the N-5 marriage. In fact, for the collector who only wants a single Proof large cent, this would be an excellent candidate. Although Bob Grellman stated that all examples of this variety were in the same die state, this Reiver Collection coin may be an exception. A faint die crack begins at the leading edge of the coronet, even with the base of L, and meanders through the field to star 5 and beyond, passing through a dentil and crossing the wide obverse border. A second crack begins at the tip of Liberty's nose to the upper point of star 3. Another crack from the lowest hair curl passes through star 13 and also crosses the obverse border. An additional crack from the bottom edge of the bust passes vertically through the upright of the digit 1 to the border. Another crack can be seen from the border through star 11 to the inner hair bun. It is entirely possible that some of these faint cracks might meet in the bust of Liberty, although it is difficult to track them across the devices. This glittering jewel has lilac color, faded from original orange mint color, and it is much deeper on the reverse, with additional iridescent toning.
