Description

1857 N-5 Small Date Large Cent, PR65 Brown
The Herman Halpern Specimen

1857 1C PR65 Brown PCGS. N-5, High R.5. The 1857 N-3 and N-5 large cents are both proof-only varieties with about 70 of the former and 40 of the latter known today. This example appeared in a Bowers and Merena auction in 2006, where they optimistically claimed that it is tied for condition census 2. It is actually tied for eighth finest in Denis Loring's condition census of the proof large cents.
This medium brown and cherry Gem has considerable underlying faded mint red, especially on the obverse. A small planchet flake below the ear is mentioned for pedigree purposes. Deep blue patina is evident on each side. MRB PR60.
