    Description

Important PR64 Cameo 1864 Double Eagle

1864 $20 PR64 Cameo NGC. The 1864 double eagle is curiously unavailable date in proof format. Unlike many other proof dates that have a 40-50% survival rate, only 10 coins have been certified by both NGC and PCGS as non-Cameo, Cameo, and Ultra Cameo. Aside from any institutional holdings or coins that have not been certified, that means that the 1864 has a survival rate of only 20% of the mintage of 50 coins, which suggests that a number of proofs were melted as unsold at year's end. This is a splendid, deeply mirrored coin that has a significant amount of frost over the devices that provides a noticeable contrast on each side. Lightly hairlined, the most prominent pedigree identifiers on this important proof are an S-shaped lint mark from Liberty's throat into the field below, and a couple of light alloy spots in the lower reverse field. From an old-time estate, this piece has been off the market for several decades. Population: 5 in 64, 0 finer (8/05).(#89076) (Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 26DF, PCGS# 89076)

    Weight: 33.44 grams

    Metal: 90% Gold, 10% Copper
