    Description

1874 Double Eagle, PR62 Deep Cameo
A Classic Proof Double Eagle Rarity

1874 $20 PR62 Deep Cameo PCGS. Twenty 1874 proof double eagles were reportedly struck in 1874, making this issue one of the four lowest-production Liberty Head double eagles minted in this format (the other three are 1875, 1877, and 1878), according to proof mintages listed in the 2016 Guide Book. Breen (1988) indicates that seven to nine 1874 double eagle proofs still exist, while Bowers (2004) puts the number of surviving coins at eight to 10 pieces. Garrett and Guth (2008) write:

"... fewer than 10 examples can be traced, including the two that are housed in the Smithsonian and the American Numismatic Society. At least one or two examples known are seriously impaired."

The PCGS website estimates that eight to nine specimens are known. This service has actually graded six 1874 proof double eagles, four in regular proof and two of which are in Deep Cameo finish. NGC has seen five 1874 proofs, including three Cameos and two Ultra Cameos.

The Heritage Auction Archives reports 11 1874 double eagles that have crossed the auction block since 1980. Seven of these were graded as regular proofs, one as Cameo, and three as Ultra Cameo.

The PR62 Deep Cameo offering in the present lot displays rich orange-gold coloration, and the devices on both sides are accentuated by the deeply mirrored fields, providing stunning contrast. All design elements are boldly delineated, further adding to the coin's pleasing eye appeal. Were it not for wispy hairlines in the fields, this coin would perhaps have been designated one or two numerical grades higher by PCGS. We mention a minute tick at the point of Liberty's chin as a pedigree marker, as well as what might be a faint staple scratch in the field between star 13 and Liberty's hair.

This magnificent piece will be an outstanding hallmark of a Liberty Head double eagle collection. The specialist in this series will not want to miss out on this classic rarity that may not reappear for some time. Population: 1 in 62 Deep Cameo, 1 finer (5/15).(Registry values: P6)
