Proof 1875 Twenty, One of Only 7-10 Coins Believed Extant

1875 $20 PR64 Deep Cameo NGC. The Philadelphia Mint produced only 20 proof Double Eagles in 1875, all on February 13. Today, no more than 10 coins are believed extant, and the number may be as few as 7 pieces. This coin has the eye appeal of a Gem, and the technical quality is also temptingly close to that level of preservation. Distracting hairlines are few and far between, and the strike is expectantly full in all areas. The richly frosted devices appear to float atop bottomless, reflective fields. A tiny luster break on the obverse portrait behind Liberty's eye is noted solely as a pedigree marker. In sum, this is a stunning proof whose surfaces are alive with vivid orange-gold coloration.
From the Genaitis Collection of 1875 Coinage.
