Description

1877 Double Eagle, PR58 Cameo
Lightly Circulated Proof Example

1877 $20 PR58 Cameo NGC. This is an only slightly circulated proof that we would hesitate to call "impaired," as it still boasts all the attributes and convincing surfaces and full strike of a proof coin, despite the fields showing a bit of fuzziness from handling and a few scattered small- to medium-sized contact marks on each side. The surfaces are bright yellow-gold with a slight tinge of reddish patina complementing, and the contrast remains sufficiently clear for a Cameo designation. The proof mintage was recorded as 20 pieces, but perhaps half that number survive today. Given the intense demand for proof Liberty twenties, this mildly circulated specimen will provide an opportunistic entry point for many bidders that otherwise would be unavailable to them. We expect astute bidders will act accordingly. Census: 1 in 58 Cameo, 4 finer (1/13).
